  • The Theology of Divine Design: A Master Pillar

  • Introduction: Toward an Integrative Theological Anthropology
  • The "DIVINE DESIGN©" framework represents a theological synthesis that bridges classical Christian doctrine with contemporary understandings of human personality, spiritual giftedness, and liberation praxis. This theological pillar establishes the foundational constructs that validate and sanctify the use of personality typologies and spiritual gifts inventories as legitimate, even essential, tools for spiritual formation and warfare. The framework asserts that God's creative intentionality encompasses not only salvation but also psychological architecture, and that redemption in Christ restores and empowers each person's unique design for Kingdom purposes.
  • This theology is built upon six interlocking constructs: Black Theology (as experienced reality), Liberation Theology (as freedom imperative), Restorative Theology (as healing process), Social Theology (as communal context), Systematic Theology (as doctrinal foundation), and Redemptive Theology (as ultimate purpose). Together, they form a robust theological anthropology that is in practice, both intellectually credible and transformative.

  • The Six Constructs of Divine Design Theology
  • 1. Black Theology: The Theology of Experienced Reality
  • Black Theology, as articulated by James Cone and experienced in the African American religious tradition, provides the experiential foundation for Divine Design theology. It begins not with abstract propositions but with the lived reality of oppression and the God who enters into solidarity with the oppressed (Cone, 1986; 2010). This perspective insists that theological reflection must start where people actually exist, particularly those on the "front lines" of suffering (Gruchy, 1984).
  • Biblical Foundation: Exodus 3:7-8 (NKJV) - "I have surely seen the affliction of My people... and have heard their cry... I know their sorrows. So I have come down to deliver them."

  • Construct Development:
  • · Incarnation in Context: God's revelation is always contextual. Just as God entered the particularity of first-century Judaism, God meets individuals in the particularity of their psychological, cultural, and historical reality. Personality types and spiritual battles are not abstract categories but lived experiences where divine encounter occurs.
  • · The Sanctity of Particularity: Black Theology's insistence on God's bias toward the oppressed sanctifies the particularity of each person's design. If God honors the particular experience of Black suffering, then God necessarily honors the particularity of how different psychological frameworks process spiritual attack.
  • · Prophetic Authenticity: The Black prophetic tradition models how spiritual warfare must emerge from authentic experience rather than borrowed formulas. Warfare tactics must fit one's God-given design, just as the spirituals emerged from a specific cultural experience of suffering and hope.
  • Integration with DIVINE DESIGN ©: Personality profiles are not psychological reductionism but theological affirmations—a mapping of how God meets individuals in their particular "Egypts" of anxiety, depression, or spiritual oppression, and designs deliverance strategies that fit specific psychological makeup. As DuBois (1989) articulated the "double consciousness" of Black existence, believers can experience a spiritual double consciousness between their divine design and the enemy's distorted narrative.

  • 2. Liberation Theology: The Theology of Freedom Imperative
  • Liberation Theology, informed by Dietrich Bonhoeffer's concept of "costly grace," provides the freedom imperative for DIVINE DESIGN ©. Spiritual warfare is fundamentally liberation—freeing persons from strongholds so they can fulfill their God-designed purpose (Bonhoeffer, 1965). This framework echoes Bonhoeffer's critique of "cheap grace" as grace without discipleship or cross-bearing.
  • Biblical Foundation: Luke 4:18-19 (NKJV) - "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor... to set at liberty those who are oppressed."
  • Construct Development:
  • · Structural and Personal Strongholds: Just as liberation theology addresses both personal sin and structural evil, Divine Design addresses both personal spiritual attacks and systemic strongholds that exploit personality vulnerabilities.
  • · Grace that Transforms Design: Cheap grace leaves personality patterns unchanged. Costly grace—the grace that demands and enables obedience—redeems natural tendencies into holy expressions. Rigidity becomes godly discipline; distractibility becomes holy curiosity.
  • {break}
  • · Preferential Option for the Vulnerable Design: Each personality type has a vulnerable flank. Liberation theology's "preferential option for the poor" translates to a preferential protection for each type's most vulnerable aspect, demanding a communal responsibility for safeguarding these vulnerabilities.

  • Integration with DIVINE DESIGN: THE 7-21-60 SPIRITUAL WARFARE SYSTEM © functions as liberation praxis—a concrete methodology for moving from bondage to spiritual strongholds into the freedom of using one's design as God intended. Warfare strategies are liberation tactics tailored to how unique designs experience bondage. As Bonhoeffer noted, "Truth is born only of freedom" (Bonhoeffer, 1965, p. 30), and thus the truth of one's divine design can only emerge through liberation from the enemy's lies.

  • 3. Restorative Theology: The Theology of Healing Process
  • Restorative Theology understands spiritual warfare as the process of restoring the imago Dei in its particularized expression through each person's design. This perspective draws from both Pauline anthropology and therapeutic wisdom, recognizing that healing involves the restoration of original design rather than its replacement (Ott, 1972).
  • Biblical Foundation: 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (NKJV) - "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments... bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ."
  • Construct Development:
  • · Strongholds as Distorted Design: What are often called "personality flaws" are frequently original God-given design elements that have been twisted by sin, trauma, or demonic influence. Analytical gifts can become paralyzing skepticism; helpfulness can become manipulative neediness.
  • · Restoration, Not Replacement: God's redemption restores the original design rather than replacing it. Spiritual warfare cleanses the conduit so that natural boldness becomes Spirit-led courage rather than reckless impulsivity.
  • · The Healing Community: Restorative theology emphasizes that healing happens in community. One's design is restored most effectively as it functions in complement with other designs, within what Bonhoeffer called "life together."
  • Integration with DIVINE DESIGN ©.: The prayers for different personality types in spiritual warfare materials are restorative prayers—asking God to restore the original, holy purpose behind each design tendency. Spiritual disciplines become restorative practices. As Ott noted, God's reality "has manifested and revealed itself in the midst of the real world" (Ott, 1972, p. 167), and thus restoration happens within actual psychological reality.

  • 4. Social Theology: The Theology of Communal Context

  • Social Theology, informed by Bonhoeffer's ecclesiology and Pauline teachings on the Body of Christ, situates Divine Design within communal reality. No design fights alone; spiritual warfare is a communal enterprise with division of labor according to design (Bonhoeffer, 1965).
  • Biblical Foundation: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 (NKJV) - "For as the body is one and has many members... if the ear should say, 'Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,' is it therefore not of the body?"
  • Construct Development:
  • · Design Complementarity: The Body of Christ metaphor extends beyond spiritual gifts to include psychological diversity. The community needs both reliability and inspiration, structure and spontaneity. Spiritual warfare fails when individuals try to fight using tactics incompatible with their design.
  • · The Community as Armory: The church functions not merely as a gathering but as an armory where different weapons (gifts) are distributed according to design. Personality profiles essentially create a spiritual warfare organizational chart for the community.
  • · Accountability to Design: Social theology provides the accountability structure—one's design is not merely for personal benefit but is a contribution to the community's spiritual warfare capability. Neglecting to develop one's design leaves a flank exposed in the communal battle.
  • Integration with DIVINE DESIGN ©.: References to "squad" and "platoon" in spiritual warfare materials root the practice in ecclesial reality. A seven-second prayer is not merely personal survival but represents holding one's position in the communal battle line. As Bonhoeffer observed, people "are individuals totally different and only 'united' by the 'Word' in churches" (Bonhoeffer, 1965, p. 39).

  • 5. Systematic Theology: The Doctrine of Divine Intentionality
  • Systematic Theology provides the doctrinal underpinning for DIVINE DESIGN ©.: God's sovereign, deliberate creation of human diversity as good and purposeful. This construct addresses theological objections that personality typologies represent secular intrusions into spirituality.

  • Biblical Foundation: Psalm 139:13-16 (NKJV) - "For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb... Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed."

  • Construct Development:
  • · Creation Goodness Extended: If God declared all creation good, this declaration includes the psychological structures of human personality. Personality frameworks reflect aspects of God's diverse creative palette.
  • · Providence in Personality: God not only creates but providentially places each design in specific contexts where that design is needed. Particular empathic capacities in specific environments represent divine placement for spiritual warfare in that territory.
  • · Eschatological Continuity: Psychological designs are not temporary but have eternal significance. Servant hearts and strategic minds will find redeemed expression in the New Creation.

  • Integration with DIVINE DESIGN ©.: The term " DIVINE DESIGN ©. " is inherently theological, asserting that discovering one's psychological type involves discovering God's creative intention. Correlations between personality types and spiritual gifts are not arbitrary but reflect how God wires certain psychological frameworks for particular distributions of grace. This aligns with Ridderbos's (1975) observation of how Paul recognized both universal sin and grace as individualized in human experience.

  • 6. Redemptive Theology: The Ultimate Purpose
  • Redemptive Theology provides the ultimate telos: DIVINE DESIGN ©. serves dominion—taking territory for the Kingdom through works prepared specifically for each design. Spiritual warfare becomes the necessary precondition for this dominion work.

  • Biblical Foundation: Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV) - "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."

  • Construct Development:
  • · Design-Specific Dominion: The "good works" God prepared are design-specific. Strategic leadership and beauty-creation represent different but equally valuable expressions of Kingdom dominion.
  • · Warfare for Works: Spiritual warfare clears the ground so design-specific works can be accomplished. Defensive strategies protect the design, training develops it, and deployment exercises it for dominion.
  • · Christ as Perfect Design: Jesus embodies the perfect integration of all designs—strategic planning, empathetic connection, and bold action. Christian redemption includes being conformed to Christ's wholeness while expressing particular facets of his image.

  • Integration with DIVINE DESIGN ©: Long-term legacy planning represents redemptive theology applied—envisioning what territory specific designs can take for the Kingdom once fully equipped. This aligns with Cone's (1986; 2010) assertion that the gospel is fundamentally "a religion of liberation" into purposeful action.

  • Scholarly Integration and Conclusion
  • The DIVINE DESIGN ©. theology finds resonance in multiple scholarly traditions documented in theological bibliography. Bonhoeffer's call for a "religionless Christianity" that meets people in their reality anticipates an approach where typologies serve as tools meeting people where they actually exist (Bonhoeffer, 1965). The balance he proposes between "worldliness" (engagement with reality) and "secret discipline" (spiritual practice) (Reist, 1969) mirrors the balance between psychological insight and spiritual warfare discipline.

  • DuBois's (1989) concept of "double consciousness" finds a spiritual correlate in the tension between divine design truth and demonic design distortion. Pauline anthropology, particularly as explored by Ridderbos (1975) and Dunnam (1982), with its emphasis on diverse gifts within one Body, naturally extends to include psychological diversity for different functions in spiritual battle.

  • This theological pillar establishes DIVINE DESIGN ©. not as pop psychology but as serious theological anthropology applied to spiritual warfare. It represents faithful theological innovation—taking ancient truths and applying them through God-given modern tools. The framework stands on solid theological ground, affirming God's intentional design in psychological diversity, meeting people in their actual psychological reality following Christ's incarnational example, providing design-specific paths to healing and holiness, building up the Body through design complementarity, and pointing toward the eternal deployment of our designs.

  • As noted in Bonhoeffer's Spiritual Care, "Only through prayer and mission will spiritual care work" (Bonhoeffer, 1985, p. 63). DIVINE DESIGN ©. provides the framework for that prayer and mission to be design-specific, theologically grounded, and practically effective for liberation, restoration, and dominion.
